Hans George Hartzog, born in 1738 in Sandhausen, Germany, came to South Carolina on the ship, Cunliffe, in 1752 with his parents, a brother and twin sisters. In 1759, he served in the Cherokee War. In 1765, he married Catherine. In 1765, 1768 and 1774, he received land grants totaling 350 acres in the area that is now Branchville, SC. According to family tradition,
Back Description
George was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War. He was killed by Tories in 1782 near Rush’s Mill, this site. His wife, Catherine, and two brothers furnished supplies to the Patriot Soldiers. His son, George, migrated to Mississippi in 1802. Sons, John, Tobis and Daniel moved to the Barnwell District in the early 1800s. Many of their descendants live here today.
