Front Description
In order to maintain control of the Beaufort District and protect communications on the King’s Highway, an earth and palisade fort was built on the high ground between Coosawhattchie and the Pocotaligo bridges: the strategic crossroads of the Southern Parishes. This fort was named for the commander of the British garrison at Charleston during the fall of 1780, Lt. Col. Nisbet Balfour, one of the most disliked officers in South Carolina.
