Front Description

The town of Hodges began around 1852 as a stop on the Greenville & Columbia R.R. The station was first named for nearby Cokesbury and then renamed Hodges Depot. The first Hodges post office also opened in 1852. Both were built near the still-extant c.1822 home of George Washington Hodges (1792-1876), the town’s namesake. His father John Hodges moved to Ninety Six District before the American Revolutionary War and was a Patriot militia officer under Gen. Andrew Pickens.

Back Description

Hodges was incorporated in 1873 and soon became an economic hub for northern Greenwood County. The town boasted general stores, mills, boarding houses, saloons, and other ventures. By 1904 a bank opened, and the Piedmont & Northern R.R. began servicing Hodges in 1912. The population peaked around 1940 with over 300 residents. The town well is believed to date to the arrival of the railroad. Now dry, for years it was a prominent meeting place for local residents.
