Johnson’s Landing: The family of governor Robert Johnson owned land around Johnson’s Landing during the colonial period. For a short time, the family lost possession of the property. In 1804, William and Richard Johnson, two brothers from Wadmalaw Island, purchased the 3,000 acres for $4,000, thus returning it to the family.
Back Description
Little Hell: How did such a beautiful place get this name? Locals, citing oral history, say approaching boats were surprised by the area’s steep bluffs and hidden rocks. Due to the challenging conditions, captains nicknamed it “Little Hell.” During the American Revolution, supplies traveled down the Savannah River and to the landing. Today, people visit the landing for recreational activities like fishing and swimming. Residents and visitors enjoy the natural, ever-flowing artesian spring.
