Front Description
Wadboo Bridge – January 31, 1781
After the unsatisfying raid on Georgetown of January 24-25, Brigadier General Francis Marion sent out several patrols to seek out and destroy, if possible, as many British supply bases/posts as they could. Capt. John Postell, Jr., commanding Officer of Kingstree Regiment of Militia and two companies of Marion’s Brigade (Cheraws District Regiment of Militia, led by Capt. Valentine Rowell), destroyed the British stores at Wadboo Bridge, including fifteen hogsheads of rum, a quantity of pork, flour, rice, salt, and turpentine. Tarleton Brown, who rode with Capt. Postell, wrote later: “Just about the break of day, we charged upon the enemy, and our appearance was so sudden and unexpected that they had not time even to fire a single gun. We took thirty-three prisoners, found twenty-odd hogsheads of old spirits, and a large supply of provisions. The former we destroyed but returned with the latter and our prisoners to the army on the Santee.” From Wadboo, Capt. Postell and his group next surprised the depot at Keithfield Plantation, just northwest of Moncks Corner.
